Spooky Movies: A TL;DR Review of Talk To Me

What is Talk To Me, the horror movie, about?

Talk To Me is an A24 production horror movie. For those that know A24 films, that might give you an idea of the ride you’re in for with this movie. Some other A24 films that fall into the creepy category are:

  1. Midsommar (check out a list of Midsommar-ish movies here)
  2. The Witch (for a list of 22 witchy movies head on over here)
  3. Hereditary
  4. It Comes At Night
  5. St. Maud

Those are just a few films that come with the quintessential unnerving vibe that has made A24 horror movies practically a genre unto themselves.

Talk To Me is happy to follow in the tradition of creating an unnerving atmosphere, making you pretty uncomfy then slapping you in the face a few times.

The basics of the horror movie Talk To Me are these:

  • It’s set in Australia
  • A bunch of kids get together and start playing party games with a cursed object (always an A+ plan)
  • They have a lot of fun messing with the spirit world and allowing themselves to be possessed for a few seconds at a time. You know, just teenager stuff.
  • Surprise, surprise, things go wrong – fast and brutally – there are some pretty gory moments in this movie.
  • They have to try to fix their mistakes while still dealing an open door to the spirit world and everything that comes through it.
  • Things go from bad to worse, you’re not guaranteed a happy ending here.
  • There is an element of grief (dead mom) that runs through the movie, which can be pretty sad at times.

Is Talk To Me a scary movie?

Absolutely.

I mean, to be fair, horror is subjective and what gets to me may not get to you, yada yada. But all things being equal, Talk To Me is an unnerving, umcomfy ride with notes of pretty intense gore, classic teenagers messing with stuff they shouldn’t, and elements of demonic possession. It’s fair to say the average horror fan with get their creep fix from watching Talk To Me.

Demonic possession-style movies are some of the ones that really spooky me, and Talk To Me did manage to infiltrate my dreams a little. If you’re a horror fan, that’s a sign of a pretty good horror movie.

Watch Talk To Me if you like this stuff in your horror movies:

  • Demonic possession
  • Tension-building
  • Yelling at dumb teenagers doing dumb things
  • Jump-scares
  • Intense gore (but not like Saw, every scene gore)

I thought that I wasn’t going to like it. I did like it but I don’t feel like I would rewatch it. I feel like the ending was definitely disturbing.

100% agree. It was probably a 1-time watch for me too. Not because it wasn’t good, but it was heavy.
