The U.S. – But Make It Witches (AI-Generated Witches Inspired by Each State)

Witches and witchcraft have a long history that predates the United States, but the U.S. certainly has its own history with witches. The most famous is probably the Salem Witch Trials. Not a great time. But it has gained so much infamy that now the town of Salem is celebrated for its witchy vibes and historical significance. But Salem isn’t the only place witches were thought to exist in the U.S., and today, we’re going to use the magic of AI to help us imagine the witches of the 50 U.S. states.

Love it or hate it, AI can do some pretty incredible things. In this case, it has created images of witches for [almost] every U.S. state. Can you guess the U.S. state based on the witch? Some of these witches are also joined by familiars – a witch’s best friend. In typical AI-fashion things are not completely “normal” but neither are witches, so that’s ok.

The familiars are a little cute and a little creepy. Bascially, they fit right in here.

What Are Familiars in Witchcraft?

Ah, familiars… Spooky little sidekicks. Familiars are an integral part of the witch’s world, and their connection to witchcraft is as ancient as the cauldron itself.

In the realm of witchcraft, familiars are supernatural companions that witches hold near and dear. They come in various forms, from animals like cats, owls, and toads to ethereal entities and spirits. These otherworldly beings are believed to share an intimate and inexplicable bond with their witch, often serving as guardians, guides, and catalysts for magical endeavors.

Whether they take the form of a black cat with piercing eyes or an elusive shadow that flits through the night, familiars are a captivating aspect of witchcraft. They represent the unseen, the arcane, and the connection between the witch and the ethereal world.

Spooky AI-Generated Characters

SpookyAtHeart is here for all things spooky, and the mythology of witches has a home right in the middle of Spookyville. Maybe the computer scientists who brought us AI are modern-day witches…

How does AI- generate images like these witches from every state?

Magic.

Truly that’s my best guess. Code is modern-day witchcraft – change my mind.

A guide to creating your own AI-witchy art

If you want a quick guide on how to create your own state-inspired witch art, head to the bottom of the post. I made a short guide about AI image generation and my process.

U.S. States as witches

Witch state is your favorite?

I think South Dakota might be mine…

There are a couple of different image galleries in this post but the images in each are the same. I just wanted to include a couple of different ways of viewing the pictures. There’s a slideshow that you can scroll through, and then there are all the images in a row below, with captions that give you the state they are inspired by.

How to make your own AI-generated witches

If you have any interest in trying to generate your own state-themed witch, here’s how to go about it.

Be warned, this is a very simplified guide to how to create an image like these with AI. If you’ve never used tools like ChatGPT or Midjourney before, it will take a little time to learn.

Tools you’ll need:

Midjourney

Price: $10/month & up

What to do with it:

Midjourney is an AI image generation program that allows you to turn text prompts into images. Like your very own magic wand!

Basically, you tell Midjourney about the image you want to see, and it creates something in the realm of what you describe. You can get more detailed and complex than that, but this isn’t a full Midjourney class, so we’ll leave it at that for now.

So for this project, you’ll basically get your Midjourney subscription, then type in the prompt ‘/image’ hit ENTER, then add the text description of what you want your witch image to look like.

That part is where the next tool comes in…

ChatGPT (optional, but helpful)

Price: Free

What to do with it: ChatGPT is a text-based AI program that can be helpful for all sorts of projects. For this one, I was looking at trying to create a witch for 50 states, so 50 witches. That’s a lot. I also wanted the images that were generated to reflect each state in some way. The landscape, clothes, items in the image, etc.

So, in order to have 50 different descriptions of 50 different witches inspired by 50 different U.S. states, I used ChatGPT to help expedite the process.

How I used ChatGPT to help create images
  1. I asked ChatGPT to list the 50 states.
  2. I told it I was going to use an image generator that needed text prompts to know what images to create, and that I wanted it (ChatGPT) to help me create 50 prompts that I could feed into the image generator.
  3. I then got more specific. I told ChatGPT that for each prompt it should work its way down the list of U.S. states and create a prompt describing an image of a witch whose appearance was based on a U.S. state. I also told ChatGPT I wanted certain words like “photo” and “high-detail” included in each prompt. Then I told it to repeat the process for each of the 50 states.

Pretty quickly, I got a series of good prompts that could be fed into an image generator like Midjourney. ChatGPT doesn’t always get it right the first time though, and for a program like Midjourney to do its best work there are some best practices for the way prompts should be worded.

If you’re not careful you can end up with a half-human, half-lizard situation. Which could be cool, but isn’t what I was looking for.

That’s a VERY quick explanation of how to create your own state-inspired witchy artwork. If you’re only creating 1 or 2 images, you could just write your own description directly into Midjourney without the help of ChatGPT.

Like I mentioned before, we’ve got [almost] every U.S. state in witch-form here. As I went through the process a couple of states got lost in the sauce.

We’re missing a few of the U.S. states in this collection of witches, can you figure out which witches we still need?
